Free museum with lots of examples of prehistoric fossils and a dig pile to find your own fossils. Very friendly, helpful, and informative curators. Bring sturdy gardening tools to dig. Plastic won't work. Restrooms on site. Bring a picnic-no restaurants in this town.
Wonderful place to learn the geology of Eastern North Carolina. Fun to find sharks teeth as well. I spoke at a NC STEM science camp for local middle school students and led a mine bus tour. Lots of fun!
This was an unexpected surprise. We came across this on a recent trip in the area and with 3 young teen boys in our party thought we'd give it a shot. We were not expecting much from the surrounding area and the look of the building but that changed quickly. There are several rooms in one building and whole other building across the street. There are lots of fossils and artifacts. All the kids enjoyed digging for fossils in the pile and they get to keep what they find. Great experience!
Great place for children of all ages! Bring your own shovel and sifter, and it won't cost anything. Great place to just spend a few hours. Not a full day activity. Don't forget to bring something to put your newly found treasures in!
the museum is great, but the two fossil digging areas stole the show. Old and young alike had a great time searching, shark teeth and other fossils were abundate. Free admission and loads of fun
